The thesis
One ordinary working-class man's nearly century-long life - moving from WWI Eastern Europe through socialist awakening, the Spanish Civil War, WWII, and decades crossing the world's oceans as a Merchant Marine - proves that the great moral turning points of the twentieth century were not made by nations or ideologies alone, but by individual human beings who repeatedly chose conscience over comfort, and that recovering such lives is both a historical imperative and an urgent guide for the generations who inherited their world.
